Rulloff was born near Saint John, New Brunswick. his parents where German immigrants and his brother, William Rulofson, was a photographer. Young Edward Rulloff was accused of many crimes and served several years in jail. However, he was self-educated and studied many things. His favorite thing to study or what interested him the most was linguistics. Edward had a natural talent for languages and could pick them up fairly quick so he decided to study how they all formed and developed and he wrote a book called Method in the Formation of Language. He had hoped this would bring about some fame for him and his name but it never did.
When his book didn't take off and make him a lot of money like he thought he decided to become famous in a different kind of way, the criminal way. Rulloff spent ten years in prison for the murder/disappearance of his wife Harriet. then he is charged with the murder of his daughter at the end of his ten year sentence. as a legal battle began Rulloff began teaching Albert Jarvis, son of the jailor, Latin and German. Jarvis not liking his father very much saw Rulloff as a father figure and so its no surprise that on a winter night Rulloff escapes from prison and disappears.
In 1870 Rulloff, Jarvis, and a new partner Dexter come to the town of Binghamton, New York. They are on a mission to rob the Halbert Bros. dry goods store of there silks. But the robbery goes wrong and Rulloff shoots one of the two clerks there. The gang of three tried to run and escape across a river with only Rulloff emerging on the other side of the river. The next day Rulloff was arrested at the train depot. Edward Rulloff was them convicted of murder and sentenced to death.
On May 18th, 1871 Rulloff was hung in Binghamton, New York. His last words were "Hurry up! I want to be in hell in time for dinner." After is hanging his body was desecrated but his brain was removed and taken for examination. Rulloff was the last hanging in New York.
